DOWNS and South Western Districts produced an ideal team performance to claim victory in this year’s Meg Nunn Salver tournament.

Downs lifted the Salver for the first time in seven years yesterday when the Queensland Inter-District Match-Play Championships wound up at City Golf Club.

The six-member Downs team sat out a final-day bye yesterday.

But it made no difference to the result, with the home-team sewing up victory by the close of play on Wednesday.

Downs marched through its six matches undefeated to win the coveted Salver for the first time since 2007, when it also scored a home-town victory at Toowoomba Golf Club.

It is the team’s second win in the 32-year history of the event.

Captain Marg Richards (City) and Gatton’s Dana Beutel (nee Arndt) have been a part of both victorious Downs teams.

They were joined this year by Cate Wilmot (City), Gatton’s Sharon Weatherby and Toowoomba Golf Club pair Natalie Hollis and Carmel Macdermott.

“It’s a great feeling, and the team spirit we had from the word go really shone through for us,” Richards said.

“We were able to beat the two toughest teams first-up, and that really got us on a roll.

“The course was in magnificent condition and with our local knowledge and caddies everyone contributed to get the win for us.”
