Queensland falls short in defences

- — BEN DREWE

QUEENSLAND was unable to defend its men’s and women’s Australian Hockey League titles.

Bec Dwyer and her Scorchers women qualified for Saturday’s final against New South Wales but were unable to claim back-to-back AHL titles in Brisbane.

Queensland got out to a 2-0 lead but NSW fought back to secure a 3-2 victory to take the AHL crown.

David Watts and the Queensland men missed out on a medal in the men’s AHL in Adelaide.

The Blades suffered a heartbreaking loss in the bronze medal play-off as Victoria recorded a 4-2 shoot-out victory after the match was 4-4 after regular time.

Former Toowoomba talent Kiel Brown also endured some disappointment at the end of the AHL tournament as his Western Australia team suffered a tough shoot-out loss to Tasmania as the Apple Isle took out its first AHL title.
