Diamonds sparkle in Test series triumph

-

ALLORA goalkeeper Laura Geitz is set to be one of the first players selected for the Australian Diamonds for next year’s world championships in Sydney after winning a player-of-the-match award in the 47-34 victory against New Zealand in game three.

The Diamonds will hold the Constellation Cup for another 12 months after they claimed an unbeatable 3-0 lead over New Zealand in the 2014 series at Sydney’s Allphones Arena on Saturday night.

Diamonds captain Geitz wasn’t taking anything for granted about next year’s World Cup when she spoke to APN before the recent Commonwealth Games but as skipper as well as a leading player, she would now be a certainty for selection.

Some Darling Downs fans were in the crowd of 10,379 at the venue for next year’s Netball World Cup – for what was the Diamonds’ eighth consecutive win against the Silver Ferns and 16th overall against all nations since September last year.

It was Australia’s best overall winning streak since winning 20 Tests in a row between 2001-03.

Geitz was impressed with how the Diamonds played in the win over arch rivals New Zealand.

“I’m so proud of what we’ve achieved as a team and extremely proud of the girls and the way we played tonight,” Geitz said on Saturday.
