MAY GUIDES WESTS TO ONE-DAY WIN

CAPTAIN HITS ROUND ONE CENTURY

-

BRIAN May took little time in posting the first century of the TCI A grade season as he lifted his Wests team to a round one win against Metropolitan-Easts.

May scored an unbeaten 101 as Wests started the one-day competition with a 26-run victory over last season’s one-day finalists at Harristown Park.

Wests batted first and posted 5-234 from their 40 overs thanks to the unbeaten century from captain May.

Nathan Ciesiolka (57) scored a half-century in a 126-run partnership with May, while Matt Hallas (33) also chipped in, while Mets gave up 23 extras.

Opening quick Matt Elford (3-37) was the pick of the bowlers for the Trojans.

Peter Reimers scored 49 at the top of the order for Met-Easts to get the run chase rolling but he couldn’t go on and post a half-century.

Neither could Jack Budden (34), Troy Gurski (32) or Dane Budden (31) after all made starts.

Mets were bowled out for 208 in the 38th over.

Dale Samuelsen took 3-31 with the ball for Wests.

Meanwhile, defending one-day champions Northern Brothers Diggers made a winning start to their 2014-15 season.

Diggers recorded a 46-run win over University at Rockville Park following impressive returns from Chris Hall, Shaun Cartwright and Aiden Watterson.

The Dragons batted first and amassed 3-230 from their 40 overs after contributions from Hall (86 not out), Cartwright (60) and captain Blake Anderson (43).

Chris Webster was tough to get away with the ball for University as he returned figures of 2-29 from eight overs.

Watterson then showed the way with the ball for Diggers as he took 4-46 to help restrict Uni to 9-184 from 40 overs.

“We had a pretty good win for the first round which was good,” Anderson said.

Highfields Railways posted a nine-wicket win in the other game against Souths at Middle Ridge Park.

Nathan Case top scored for the Bulldogs with 58 to chase down the Magpies’ score of 104.
