THE Dodgers’ young brigade stepped up in the absence of more experienced players to post a 12-4 victory over Warriors in round one of the Toowoomba Softball men’s competition.

Many of the usual Dodgers suspects were playing at the Ipswich Moneyball tournament while the club’s promising youngsters stepped up at Kearneys Spring Sporting Complex.

Scores were close until the fourth inning before Dodgers managed to slip away in the grand final replay.

Dodgers were well-served by pitcher-catcher combination Dylan Sheehan and Nick Moore, who were on a high after earning spots in the Queensland under-19 squad.

Stand-in Dodgers coach Peta Johnson was proud of the efforts of the younger players.

“I think the depth that we’ve got with the young boys (is good),” she said.

“I think we had six regular A graders out and those young boys filled in really well against a strong Warriors team.”

The Dodgers team that contested the Moneyball tournament at Ipswich managed to win two of their seven games at the rich carnival which featured teams from interstate and New Zealand.

Top players from the city will also be away this weekend as Toowoomba contests the Open Men’s State Championships at Redlands this weekend.

Toowoomba will take on Redlands, Redcliffe, Logan, Ipswich and Papua New Guinea in the top grade while a second Toowoomba team will contest the President’s Cup.

Meanwhile, there were no Toowoomba Softball women’s A grade games last weekend.

Returning club Devils made a late decision not to contest A grade, seeing their game against Aces abandoned, while Dodgers had to forfeit against Warriors.
