Families need time together

- EDITOR STEVE ETWELL steve.etwell@thechronicle.com.au

TODAY, more than ever, families are the most vital cog in our society.

The launch of Family Week yesterday highlighted an area of family life that is being eroded - where members all sit around the table and enjoy a meal together.

Today’s world has many distractions and it is easy for families to eat on the run and lose this most valuable daily contact.

Busy work lives, the demands of smart phones and our seeming inability to stop checking them - all impact on precious time families can spend together.

Sitting around a meal table allows all members of the family the chance to talk about their day, raise problems, be praised and made to feel just how important they really are to the others.

It is an opportunity to leave the stresses of work and school behind and catch up with the most important people in our lives.

A strong family unit means a stronger community.

Family Week reminds us to dedicate time and effort to our loved ones.

Surely nothing is more important than that?
