Support group donates chair
Palliative care program receives extra resource
THE Toowoomba Prostate Cancer Support Group has donated a lightweight wheelchair to the Toowoomba Hospital palliative care outreach program.
Sourced from the Scott Street Pharmacy’s mobility solutions service, the wheelchair will be loaned to cancer patients who are in their last stage of life.
Toowoomba Prostate Cancer Support Group representative George Malcolmson said the group was committed to helping men once they had received their cancer diagnosis.
“We are here to talk to men about our shared experiences, to help reassure them, to swap stories and help ease their stress,” he said.
“Our members all know first hand what it is like to have prostate cancer and we just want to support other men undertaking this same journey.
“Many wives attend our meetings with their husbands. This is a great way to support men diagnosed with prostate cancer but it is also a wonderful way for the wives to support each other too.”
Toowoomba Hospital Foundation chief executive officer Alison Kennedy said palliative care patients were often unable to walk far.
‘This new wheelchair will make a real difference to our patients and their families,” she said.
“Patients in their final stage of life are often cared for at home by their families. This wheelchair is lightweight and very easy to manoeuvre which will enable family members to provide mobility assistance while out and about more easily.
“We are very grateful to the Toowoomba Prostate Cancer Support Group for this donation. The members of this group are incredibly committed to helping fellow cancer sufferers and their generosity will make a big difference to many patients and families.”
The group meets on the third Tuesday of every month.
