Voting system

-

THERE has been a call by the LNP to make your voice heard in regards to compulsory preferential voting.

This is nothing more than petty party politics. While I agree that optional preferential voting is the most democratic way for voters to vote, let’s look at the facts in this issue.

I rang the AEC to find out if the compulsory voting had been removed from the house of representative seats since the changes to senate voting. The lady, after I waited five minutes, told me, “I can’t find any changes to lower house seats”. You can presume it is still compulsory.

Here we have the same party LNP wanting separate voting systems in the state, to the Commonwealth. How confusing is this for voters?

This has happened because the LNP want more seats in parliament but this is petty party politics.

More seats would be held by major parties’ puppets, costing the Queensland taxpayers money for no great benefit. Changing voting laws, holiday dates, removing the smart state is all petty party politics, does nothing for the economy of the state, but all major parties engage in it.

While oppositions continue to take these petty issues instead of major issues to governments in debate, they are allowing the voters to think the government is doing a good job. — JOHN SLACK-SMITH, Gough St, Goondiwindi
