Sporting field opens to public
THE FIRST stage of a massive sporting complex in Highfields was unveiled to the general public at a special opening event on Saturday.
Toowoomba Regional Council Environment and Community Committee chairman Cr Geoff McDonald said the new Highfields Sport and Recreation Park would provide desperately needed facilities for the Highfields community as well as providing a potential venue for state and national events.
“This is an exciting project not just for Highfields, but for the Toowoomba region,” Cr McDonald said.
“Sports tourism is a burgeoning sector of the market and Toowoomba now has a wonderful new facility that will draw sporting events to this region.
“Continued growth in both local sports clubs and the wider population of Highfields has meant there has been a developing shortfall in sport and recreation facilities in recent years.
“This new development will provide top-class facilities for netball, rugby union and cricket clubs in the Highfields area. It won’t stop there as there are more plans to continually grow and develop the facility.”
Cr McDonald said the vision for the park was to provide a high quality multi-sports facility that offers a range of opportunities for local residents and visiting teams.
“The facility will be used daily for training and competition but also be designed and developed such that it has the capacity to host larger sporting events.”
