Men finally put victory under belts

92-78 win puts the men back on track

- Anton Rose

With a win finally under their belts in 2016, the Toowoomba Mountaineers’ investment in recruits looks to be finally paying off.

The pressure had been on the men to recreate the form of last year, but 2016 hasn’t started that brightly as yet.

Four consecutive losses saw them scratching around for answers after some physical outings in the QBL sent them back to the drawing board.

But the arrival of 6’10” Cade Towers heralded the start of a Mountaineers revival in round four with their two imports also shining in their win against Gold Coast.

Chris Whitehead again top scored with 38 points, keeping the Rollers at bay with a comfortable lead and continuing to prove his worth.

“It was finally nice to get a win it has been a long time coming,” Mountaineers coach Anthony Corcoran said.

“Our approach was to come out hungry and we played with a lot more composure this time.”

The towering Cade Towers only made a small contribution due to a disrupted training schedule.

But with more height at his disposal now, the coach is confident that the signs are promising for Towers and the rest of the season.

“Cade was a little bit unlucky,” he said.

“But I can see down the track that he will be a huge boost for us, having such a big guy in the middle.”

With the pressure of finally getting the first win off their backs the Neers will be hoping to build a string of results in the hope of sending them to the finals.

But with a number of upsets occurring in round four that task may be harder than first thought.

“It is a bit hard to read into early results, people will call them upsets but teams will finds their stride with game time.” Corcoran said.

“There will be more results to make people sit up and notice what’s going on.”

Eslewhere on the coast the injury-hit women limped through their tie against the Rollers, going down 106-65 with both Torres sisters again stealing the show with top scores for the ’Neers.

Both sides have a bye this weekend.
