DEVELOPERS have scaled back plans for a supermarket in Kingsthorpe and will build more speciality retail stores due to competition from a planned Foodworks.

Kingsthorpe Central Pty Ltd had lodged plans for a two-stage development that would include a supermarket and nine speciality shops on Gowrie St, Kingsthorpe.

Those plans were given approval by Toowoomba Regional Council in October 2009.

Now a new application has been lodged that includes a scaled-back supermarket.

Developers said another planned supermarket complex with a Foodworks, coffee shop and bakery on Kingsthorpe-Haden Rd, which were recently granted approval by the council, necessitated the reduction.

Developers said the competing supermarket,

❝This will provide the applicant with a more appropriate development to suit the evolving local economy.

evolving market conditions and operational works details and design issues had resulted in a reduction in the size of the supermarket and stores.

“This will provide the applicant with a more appropriate development to suit the evolving local economy and engineering constraints of the subject site,” town planners Project Urban stated.

“It will also facilitate a stage two expansion of the supermarket in response to growth in Kingsthorpe at the appropriate time.”
