SPORT is all about big moments. And there have been some memorable ones over the past 12 months for sport on the Darling Downs.

In the lead-up to Christmas, we will highlight some of the big performers and events in Darling Downs sport in 2016 with our year in review reader polls.

Today we look at the Moment of the Year for sport on the Darling Downs.

The South-West Thunder had endured two tough seasons in football’s National Premier Leagues Queensland competition so their 2016 season-opening win was massive for the club.

The Thunder broke their drought with a 2-1 win over Northern Fury at Clive Berghofer Stadium on February 27 in their 47th NPL Qld game.

Then there aren’t many bigger sporting events on the Darling Downs than the Weetwood Handicap and this year it stayed in Toowoomba when Tony Sears-trained Choice Bro won our top race at Clifford

Park on April 16.

That was followed by success in the biggest sporting event of them all The Olympic Games.

Toowoomba talents Emilee Cherry and Gemma Etheridge were part of the Australian women’s rugby sevens team that won the historic first Olympic gold medal for the sport in Rio de Janeiro in August.

The Pittsworth Danes also

savoured victory when they took out an exciting and wet TRL grand final 18-12 against Warwick at Clive Berghofer Stadium on September 18.

The title victory came in the club’s 50th season it was a big occasion for Danes fans.

And in the lead-up to the Commonwealth welterweight title fight between Kris George and Cameron Hammond, not

many gave George a chance.

But he proved his talent, not only as a puncher but a boxer, when he outpointed highly-regarded former Olympian Hammond at Rumours International on November 25.
