Steketee stars in key role

-

CRICKET: Warwick paceman Mark Steketee could have secured a new role with the Brisbane Heat after his great bowling in the last over of their Big Bash League win against Adelaide.

The Heat made a great score of 5-206 from their 20 overs but the Strikers made a good go of their run chase at the Adelaide Oval on Wednesday night.

Adelaide was cruising at 0-133 after 11 overs before Steketee broke the opening stand by claiming the wicket of Jake Weatherald (52).

Ben Dunk (85) and Travis Head (23) then looked to be guiding the Strikers to victory before late wickets halted their progress.

The Strikers needed 17 runs off the final over but fell well short thanks to the efforts of Steketee.

Jake Lehmann, who hit a six to win a game in the final over last season for the Strikers, fell to Steketee first ball before the Warwick quick snared the wicket of Chris Jordan (one) off the final ball to see the Heat restrict Adelaide to 6-196 to win by 10 runs.

Steketee finished with figures of 3-32 from his four overs to show Heat bowlers were capable of taking wickets despite a tough season last summer.

That performance could see Steketee retain the role of go-to man in the latter overs for the rest of the Big Bash. The Heat now take on the Thunder in Sydney on December 28.
