A POPULAR Highfields cafe has branched out into a new speciality and is transforming into a burger bar at night.

Marius Kruger runs the Kerb Cafe & Gelato at Highfields Village Shopping Centre with his wife Angelic.

The South African-born man saw an opportunity in the Highfields market limited burger options.

Already looking to try something new, he decided to specialise in burgers and now offers a range of home-made options.

He said items like the beef burger dubbed “Uncle Toby’ and the pan-fried chicken “Auntie Sue” had proved popular with customers.

“Every afternoon the whole cafe changes to a burger bar, and we will soon offer all our burgers throughout the day as well because it’s been so popular,” he said.

The burgers sell for about $9 at the BYO cafe.

Mr Kruger said the business was focused on families in Highfields and Toowoomba who wanted good quality meals.

“The reviews have been amazing. We have one family who drives from Toowoomba and they’ve been coming almost every second night.”

The cafe caters for vegetarians and people on gluten-free diets.

Mr Kruger said he wanted to provide another option to the big chains like McDonald’s for people in Highfields.

”We like to specialise in something and do it really well.”

Next year the cafe plans to increase its opening hours, become licenced and put on live music.
