Good, good, good vibrations
A pharmacy chain is doing its bit for women’s happiness by stocking the ultimate toy
THIS week’s column has me all abuzz. If you ever saw the Sex in the City episode where Carrie, Samantha and Miranda told Charlotte they had bought a vibrator called The Rabbit you’ll know what I am talking about.
Turns out Priceline Pharmacy have started selling The Smile Makers range so you can pick up a vibrator while you’re shopping for lipstick, a toothbrush or shampoo. It is, they say, an attempt to normalise sexual health and happiness for women. Smile Makers is the only brand in its category that cannot be found in adult shops but instead stocked in mainstream outlets such as Priceline.
While your toothbrush keeps your teeth clean, a spokeswoman for Priceline said your vibrator also has health benefits, not just for your body but for your sexual self-confidence and relationship too. And I agree.
Research shows that women over a certain age who don’t have sex may lose some “youthful” function – kind of a use it or lose it proposition.
Using a sex toy can help and, for all ages, it is also the ultimate safe sex, as long as you don’t share.
But, more than that, it’s about acknowledging your right to pleasure and having power over your own sexuality.
“Self-pleasuring is a positive practice that will help you understand your own sexual response and needs while making you feel good,” says ob/gyn Dr Christiane Northrup, author of Goddesses Never Age.
“And, if you think about it, how is a partner supposed to know how to touch you to make you feel good if you don’t know yourself?’’
Of course, as with everything, you should use a sex toy in moderation, as Charlotte found out.
After she bought The Rabbit she did not leave the house. Ever. Her friends had to do an intervention to get her out into the land of the living again. They threw the vibrator out the window.
I haven’t put batteries in mine yet but I’ll probably pick some up next time I drop into the chemist for hand soap and toothpaste.
Happy buzzy Christmas.
