THUNDER IN LION’S DEN

- Anton Rose anton.rose@thechronicle.com.au

South-West Thunder know that when they run out at Suncorp Stadium tomorrow, they will quite literally be stepping into the lion’s den.

The 52,000-capacity colosseum of Queensland sporting history hosts their National Premier Leagues encounter with the Brisbane Roar youth tomorrow.

Thunder will be hoping the occasion, the atmosphere and the promise of the three points will inspire its very own gladiators when they take to the state’s premier sporting arena.

“Brisbane Roar is my A-League team and to be able to play there is surreal,” South-West Thunder vice-captain Tom Fanning said.

“It is a dream come true for me and especially the boys because they have been talking about it for weeks.

“It is going to be a great spectacle.”

The chance to play at Suncorp is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Very few can say they have graced the field where the Brisbane Roar A-League team will play just hours later.

Thunder is hoping to put the gravity of the occasion to the back of its mind, as a first win of the season will take precedence over any urge to relish the moment.

“I think it will be a bit surreal to start off,” Fanning said.

“Playing in that stadium will be exceptional and to play against the Roar is a great opportunity for myself and the team.

“But at the end of the day we are going there to get three points and I know the boys will put in 110 per cent.

“We have nerves but they are good nerves if anything because the boys are just really looking forward to the weekend now.”
