Winners emerge from tough grand finals

-

After a long and gruelling journey through the Downs Rugby Teenage Competition the most deserving sides stand as premiers after the grand final day held at the Highfields Sports Complex on the weekend.

After a season-long effort, the teams that were able to commit and consistently perform at a high standard finished as grand final victors.

The Toowoomba Bears were met by the Highfields Redbacks in the under 13 grand final.

Both sides were hunting for a final win of the season to polish off a stunning effort, however, after a monstrous effort from the forward pack and deceptive back line plays, the Toowoomba Bears were too strong for the Redbacks.

Bears Coach Bill Luck commended his team’s efforts on the 27-7 win and sincerely thanked Redbacks for a well-fought match up.

Both teams played outstanding and made for a thrilling first match of the day.

It is a rare occasion that one club takes home more than one premiership in a year, however, USQ Saints defied the odds and returned to their club as the under 14, under 15 and the under 17 premiers for 2017.

The under 14 USQ side took down South Toowoomba in the second match of the day with after a gallant effort from both sides.

Each team had equal opportunity with the ball, but USQ were too effective in the counter-attack from their half breaking the line and outrunning the opposition to a 31-5 victory.
