Titans on charge for clean sweep in GPV

VOLLEYBALL: The Toowoomba Titans find themselves in a position they have not been in for a while.

Going into their second round of games in the new Queensland Grand Prix Volleyball competition on the Gold Coast this weekend, both men and women’s sides are sitting at the top of the ladder.

Their rise comes as a stark contrast to their fortunes last year when the women finished second-bottom of the Premier Volleyball League competition ladder.

Home advantage played a big role in the club’s opening round success, running out to a combined seven wins from eight between both men and women’s teams in the curtainraiser a month ago.

Now, the Titans have to run out away from home in the hope that round one was no fluke.

Women’s coach Chris Hillman is certain that the Titans are no one-hit-wonder.

“I am confident we can take it (the trophy) out,” he said. “We definitely have the girls there.”

While there has been no magic spell cast or secret potion induced by the Titans to put their round one success down to, Hillman said their run of good form was all about timing with the likes of Cassie Thomas only getting better with time.

“We have got the depth and it has been years in the making, the girls are experienced now,” he said.

The coach is not lowering expectations ahead of the three-game round.

“Absolutely (the best is still to come) we should be more dominant and I am looking at winning all three this weekend,” he said.

Hillman’s side has been boosted by the addition of two new recruits for the second round in junior Australian representative Lucy Leadbetter and Brigette Fee.
