BOXING: In sporting terms he is still a rookie but the eyes of Australian boxing will be fixed on Tim Tszyu when he steps into the ring in Toowoomba tomorrow night.

Tszyu is set to meet Townsville’s Chris Khan in a five-round bout on the TGW & Smithy Bring The Big Fights card at Rumours International.

It is the sixth professional appearance for the undefeated 22-year-old and another intriguing step in the career of the son of one of Australia’s greatest world champions.

Tszyu is working overtime to make his own mark in the boxing world.

And while the comparisons to his father Kostya will always follow him his visit to Toowoomba is the next step in his own successful climb up the Australian boxing ladder.

“I recently came back from Russia and a three-week training camp with my father and I’m going to show everyone what I’ve been working on,” Tszyu said at yesterday’s sponsor’s and media conference.

“I hope Chris Khan brings it all to the table because you can’t take anything

lightly.

“I’m looking forward to the challenge and I can’t wait to get in the ring on Saturday night.”

Tszyu’s trainer Glen Jennings also spoke of his young fighter’s progress and the inevitable comparisons to his father who Jennings worked with for 16 years.

“I’m sure you’ll enjoy what Tim does in the ring on Saturday night,” Jennings told the large audience.

“He looks like his dad, he certainly fights to a degree like his dad but he is his own fighter.

“You’ll see a style that he’s developed and he’s still working on.

“Every fight is a learning curve for him.

“We’re keeping him busy fighting him all round the country.

“Already as a rookie he’s had offers from overseas destinations.

“We look forward to putting on a good show for you on Saturday night.”

FIGHT-night tickets are available at Smithy’s Gym, Toowoomba or at the door on Saturday night.

The card is headed by the Australian welterweight title bout between Toowoomba’s Jamie Hilt and defending champion Rivan Cesaire.

First fight is at 6.05pm.
