Beefing Up to teach the next generation of young farmers

- Kate Dodd kate.dodd@thechronicle.com.au

THE average age of producers is an ongoing concern for people like Queensland Simmental Breeders president Marty Rowlands.

The group has responded by identifying the importance of educating young people about the areas of opportunity and solid careers that can be sought within the beef sector.

“By showing these young enthusiasts the diversity within the rural sector, the goal is to hopefully maintain some of these participants within the beef sector as employees,” Mr Rowlands said.

To do that, Queensland Simmental Breeders started the Beefing Up the Next Generation program, a four-day youth camp designed to deliver a first-class educational experience about Australia’s beef industry.

Mr Rowlands said as part of the week, participants could expect the opportunity to develop leadership skills, teamwork participation, build self-confidence and enhance their communication skills.

Guest speakers will include Bovine Dynamic livestock nutritionist Dr Matthew George and Meat and Livestock Australia producer engagement officer Jarrod Lees.

Dr George will provide a “back to basics” look at beef cattle nutrition and give the group an extensive tour of a feedlot where he is the consulting nutritionist.

Mr Lees will lead a practical session of primal meat cut selection and identification and outline eating quality and the role MLA plays in the beef industry.

The camp will be held at the Pittsworth Showgrounds from September 28 to October 1. Participants will be capped at 100.
