Nick takes fear out of fire ovens
ANYTHING you can cook in your kitchen at home, you can cook in a camp oven.
That’s the view of Nick Small (Ranger Nick), who was demonstrating outdoor cooking yesterday at the 2017 Queensland Outdoor Adventure and Motoring Expo, run by Australian Events.
“Everyone knows how to cook,” Ranger Nick said.
“But what I do is try to take the fear out of cooking outside.
“I teach them what to bring from their kitchen out to the fire.”
Ranger Nick said cooking outdoors was not hard.
“If you watch it, smell it and listen to it, you’ll be on the right track.”
Ranger Nick is giving demonstrations at the expo three times a day, focusing on gas cooking, cooking on wood-fire coals and cooking with charcoal brick heads.
Foods he cooks include damper, roast pork and mushrooms.
“You can cook anything in a camp oven, but I love cooking the traditional meals like stew, lasagne, stroganoff and especially
roasts - and they’re really easy to do.”
Australian Events event manager Aly Ryan said the first day of the expo was hugely successful, with between 4000 and 5000 people entering the Toowoomba Showgrounds for the day.
“We’ve had a really great day. The two car parks have been full all day.
“We’ve got a high percentage of over 60s here today, but we’ve got lots of families too.”
The expo continues today at the showgrounds from 9am to 5pm and tomorrow from 9am to 4pm.
