Cods have future in own hands
RUGBY UNION: Condamine is on the cusp of clinching a spot in this month’s Wagner Wellcamp Risdon Cup finals’ series and will be out to ram home that opportunity today.
Condamine will be in control of its own season destiny today when its faces in-form Toowoomba Rangers in a crucial final-round battle at Gold Park.
It is one of four knife-edge clashes involving the competition’s top-six teams that will shape this month’s finals’ series.
Other matches set to impact top-five positions are USQ against Goondiwindi at home and Dalby travelling to Heritage Oval to meet Toowoomba Bears.
The Wheatmen will be looking to wrap up the minor premiership with a win over Bears who are nervously placed in fourth position.
USQ faces what shapes as today’s toughest assignment when it looks to pull together an injury hit line-up in search of much-needed premiership points against the Emus.
Uni sits in equal fifth place with Condamine but has an inferior for-and-against record to the Cods which could cost them a finals’ spot should the teams remain on equal premiership points.
Club president and A grade fullback Doug McNicholl said the Cods are eager to decide their own fate today.
“It’s a finals’ game for us and that’s how we’ll be approaching it,” he said.
“Condamine and Rangers always enjoy a strong rivalry and I’m sure this game will be no different.
“We are at full strength and we’re keen to be in charge of our own destiny. There’ll be no excuses if we’re not good enough on the day.
“It’s also a big day for our Codettes in the last women’s sevens competition match at Warwick this week. They are vying for the minor premiership and we wish them all the best as well.”
