JOE and Karen Perry have seen more kitchens in their career than most of us would see in 10 lifetimes.

The experienced pair of custom kitchen and bathroom designers, who renovated more than 800 over 25 years, has put their business Glenfield Interiors on the market for the first time.

The couple first went into kitchen renovations in 1992 after Mr Perry finished his apprenticeship and his wife worked at Target.

The business name was chosen to ensure it could be comfortably sold to a new owner - a remarkable foresight.

“A lot of the joinery shops in town use their own last name, but we just thought we’d go with a different name to help with on-selling. It’ll stay the same name even after we sell it,” Mrs Perry said.

“There are a lot of Glenfield names in Toowoomba, like Granges and motels, and it’s a name that pops up in people’s minds.”

Plenty of things have changed about the nature of kitchen renovations, including the popularity of stone benchtops over laminated ones, but Mr Perry said the quality of work was still important.

“Because we custom design everything, it’s creating something that’s individual to people and works with their dream or vision and turns it into a reality,” he said.

“Everybody has got different ideas, and some more specific than others – they’re all probably satisfying in different ways.

“Our goal with the transfer of the business is for the (new owners) to carry on the service of high-quality renovations that have been undertaken for so long.

“We do all our own cutting, fabricating – we manufacture and install the whole project in-house.”

Glenfield Interiors, based on the intersection of Goggs and Prescott Sts, employs three people and has its own workshop and showroom.

The Perrys have got open minds about how their retirement will look.

“Just retirement and travel - just want to head around Australia, doing the grey nomad thing. Maybe we’ll travel to Europe as well,” Mr Perry said.
