TRANSFORMING city homes and giving them a new lease on life has inspired a new Toowoomba business.

Toowoomba builder Josh Poynter started JRP Building Services in January which specialises in renovations, restorations and extensions.

Mr Poynter has been in the industry for eight years and always in Toowoomba.

“I started my apprenticeship in Toowoomba and did it with a local company,” he said.

“I started it wanting to get something behind me, a trade, and now I just love it.”

It had also been Mr Poynter’s dream to start his own company.

“September last year I decided to take the plunge and I subcontracted on other houses until January when I started my own company and I have been going ever since,” he said.

Mr Poynter said Toowoomba houses were his style, being the older colonial Queenslanders and timber homes.

“There is a big difference between a renovator, a builder and a brand new builder,” he said.

“You have got to try and match into an old place and make it look like you haven’t been there as opposed to a new build where everything is straight, square and much easier.”

Mr Poynter said he found his love for renovating from his previous employer and also the demand for this type of work. That company went from three employees when Mr Poynter first started to 27.

“I have got an apprentice,” he said.

“I had a great relationship with my last boss. He took me under his wing a lot and was probably harder on me than anyone else but that has paid off.

“So I am probably bringing that into my company as well. Being tough on the boys but really teaching them the nitty-gritty right through.

“So if they leave they know exactly what to do and hopefully run a successful business.”

Mr Poynter said since starting his company, his main jobs had been bathrooms, which he said could transform a house.

“I get a real kick out of that. Seeing the before and the design aspect as well,” he said.

“From my initial meeting with the client to the finished product.”

Mr Poynter said he was with the client from the very first moment when he received the phone call to the final sign off.

“Everything from taking the client to select the tiles, select the bath wear, fittings, paint colours. We do everything,” he said.

“I think that is what sets us apart from other companies. As in we are there right from word go to the end.

“With my company it is more personalised and a real attention to detail.”

Mr Poynter said he had received wonderful feedback from his clients, with his jobs coming via word of mouth.
