Orchestra enriches city’s culture

-

TOOWOOMBA’S energetic arts and cultural scene will get another boost with a free concert from the world-renowned Australian Brandenburg Orchestra.

The concert Brandenburg Baroque Toowoomba will be held at the Empire Church Theatre on Thursday, August 10.

Led by artistic director Paul Dyer, who plays the harpsichord, the orchestra performs music of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, known as the baroque period.

During this time composers and musicians such as Johann Sebastian Bach, George Frideric Handel and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart thrived.

Lyndall McCormack, who is credited with luring the Brandenburg to Toowoomba, has had a long association with the orchestra.

Her association started 16 years ago when it formed a cultural partnership with the APA Group, Australia’s number one gas infrastructure business, headed by her husband Mick.

She said Toowoomba worked hard to reinvigorate and develop a high standard concert facility at the Empire Church Theatre.

“Brandenburg artists are welcomed and easily catered for,” she said.

Empire Theatre general manager Kerry Saul said Toowoomba always had a dedicated arts community.

“We want to make sure that the performing arts is necessary to our young people as they grow,” he said.

Mrs McCormack credited community spirit for the region’s healthy arts and cultural scene.

“In regional towns we have to work together to generate funding, build facilities, attract quality events and performers, even to sell tickets to events, we network and encourage others to be involved,” she said.

All tickets are exhausted.
