Award for top group

-

A DARLING Downs community group has been recognised as part of the state’s top multicultural achievers.

The Dalby Welcoming Community Inc received the Local Club or Community Group Award at the Queensland Multicultural Awards yesterday.

The group was created in 2008 to promote Dalby as a more welcoming community, particularly to people from different cultures working on construction and resource sector projects.

The group’s Delicious and DeLIGHTful Festival has become a signature event for Dalby.

Multicultural Affairs Minister Grace Grace said the award winners were recognised for their valuable contributions to support and promote a united, harmonious and inclusive Queensland community.

“Since 1990, the awards have recognised individuals, community groups, businesses, government agencies and media whose efforts have helped all Queenslanders to participate in our economy and community,” Ms Grace said.

“The outstanding calibre of nominations from individuals and organisations received this year is a wonderful reflection of the work carried out across the State by people who work tirelessly to promote positive community relations.

“The theme for this year’s awards is Creating Welcome, Building Opportunity and Celebrating Diversity and each award winner has clearly demonstrated this.

“We had more than 100 nominations in this year’s awards and I congratulate all award winners and nominees.”

Ms Grace said the awards formed an integral part of Queensland Multicultural Month, held during August.
