BRYCE Riethmuller is described by his principal as “one of the most outstanding young people I’ve ever met”.

It’s high praise from Oakey State High School’s Danny Keenan, but Mr Keenan is not alone in his assessment of the 17-year-old.

Last week, Bryce was named the Darling Downs South West region’s school-based apprentice of the year, emerging from a field of 800 state-wide applicants.

It hasn’t been an easy path for Bryce, who was two months into his butchering apprenticeship with Maclagan Meats when his father died from cancer.

It was his father’s friends at Maclagan who “helped me through it,” he says.

“They were always there for me.”

he says, that he “wasn’t falling behind”.

Today Bryce sees a “bright future” for himself in the meat and livestock industry. He plans on staying with Maclagan Meats once he finishes his apprenticeship where he’s working across paddock to plate aspects of his industry.

A farm kid, Bryce has “always had a passion for butchering”.

On September 1 he will travel to Brisbane for the training awards state gala dinner where he will compete against six others for the title of Queensland’s top school-based apprentice.
