Pickering headed for luncheon
AWARD-winning cartoonist and political commentator Larry Pickering will be the guest of honour at a special luncheon to raise money for important causes.
Mr Pickering will entertain the crowd at the Heads and Hearts Safety in Sports Lunch at the Mills Precinct on August 11, with all funds raised from it going towards the Great White Campaign, the Rural Doctors Association of Queensland and Rotary.
The Great White Campaign, which focuses on bringing a neurological expert to Toowoomba, was started in honour of Toowoomba boxer Brayd Smith, who died tragically from brain injuries in 2015.
A stalwart as a cartoonist at various newspapers for decades, Mr Pickering was prominent in the 1970s and 1980s for his biting humour and skewering of Australian politicians.
He returned to the trade in 2011, also starting his blog the Pickering Post.
Organiser Tressa Lindenberg said the outspoken commentator did not hesitate to help out when she asked him.
“He said straight up, ‘I’ll come and help’,” she said.
“I’ve had the privilege to get to know him and he’s got a heart of gold.
“We’ve got 10 tickets left, so it’s been a great response from the public.”
