‘Porn is deadly’: Former brothel manager

- Meghan Harris meghan.harris@thechronicle.com.au

THE former manager of Deviations brothel in Toowoomba has spoken out about how porn “kills love and kills people’s lives.”

Speaking with the organisers of the City Free From Porn campaign, Nola Michailovic said porn was a fantasy world that caused real world problems.

Last year Toowoomba made headlines around the country for wanting to be a city free from pornography.

Then, last month the South Toowoomba Baptist Church ran a series to combat porn addiction which was described as AA for porn addicts.

Ms Michailovic said for some people porn could become so addictive that they could no longer functioned as a normal member of society.

“Porn is deadly to our

society and deadly to our children and if we don’t intervene now the damage it will do to their brains is equal to them being a drug addict and it is something we need to address,” she said.

“Porn kills love and it kills people and kills their lives, they become addicted to it.”

“It is common for most brothels around Australia to

have it (porn) showing in the foyer and have it live-streamed to the rooms.”

She said she viewed that as brothels being part of the problem instead of part of the solution.

“I chose not to show it because it would actually change the way clients would treat the ladies. Instead of seeing them as human beings they would see them as an object.

“They are trying to re-enact what they are seeing on screen so depending on the content and level of violence it can become dangerous. You can’t treat women like that even in a brothel.

“I would soon rather put Spongebob Squarepants on for them to watch.”

Ms Michailovic surveyed many waiting clients, asking them about their porn habits.

She asked what they viewed, why and how it made them feel.

“The responses I would get were great and varied. Answers ranged from loneliness, low self-esteem and wanting to learn more.”

Ms Michailovic also opened up about being in a relationship with a man who

was addicted to porn.

“I had a partner who was addicted to pornography and it caused some unrest in our household and explosive arguments,” she said.

“It planted doubt in the relationship. Porn wasn’t a direct result of the domestic violence but it was a contributor.”

She concluded that pornography was deadly to society and something needed to be done to address it.
