V8 facility would rev up tourism

A WORLD-CLASS motorsports facility in Toowoomba will deliver a massive economic boost and shore up it’s major event tourism market.

The Carnival of Flowers is undoubtedly the city’s premier event and full credit to the organisers and visitors who support it every year.

But it pins Toowoomba’s event tourism on one festival which, in a city of this size, is disappointing.

The idea of a V8 Supercar track isn’t new. It has been on several priority infrastructure lists over the years.

The plans and land are there, with the backing of big business and, to some extent, the government.

What’s missing is funding. More than 140,000 tourists are predicted to use the park, with 30,000 people able to camp at the 450-hectare site.

There’s no doubt it will boost the region’s tourism offering, but it also goes beyond that.

Toowoomba is home to its fair share of racing identities including Will Power and Cameron Shields who, despite not having the world-class track to mould their skills, have excelled on the world stage.

Imagine what future the next generation could have if this park got off the ground.

So it’s not just the economy and tourism which would benefit from the park.

Let’s get it done.
