Law and order in the laundry
NOT the most glamorous room, the laundry is, however, essential to any well-run home. For some it is a dedicated utility room, for others, the laundry is little more than a space tucked in behind a cupboard door.
Regardless of the size of your laundry, there are strategies to ensure this necessary part of the home stays organised.
When choosing a washing machine and dryer, be rigorous about what you need. Large-capacity washing machines are great for big families, but are overkill for couples and singles.
Another hard choice is whether or not you require a dryer. Again, for large families, they may be a necessary evil, but for smaller households these energy-eating appliances are possibly a luxury you and the planet don’t require.
◗ RAISING YOUR STANDARDS: One tip is to raise your washing machine and dryer off the floor. This can be done with cabinetry that can even leave some space for a storage drawer underneath. Another advantage of raising appliances is that it will save on bending when loading and lifting your clothes out of the machines.
◗ BASKET CASE: If you have a small laundry space, transport laundry from other rooms like the bedroom. Choose materials like straw, jute or canvas to store laundry, as this will make it easier to move from room to room. When storing laundry powders, soakers, bleach and other laundry chemicals, ensure they are on a high shelf and in childproof containers so kids cannot reach them.
