Time capsule found in walls of Weis site
WHILE renovating Toowoomba’s iconic Weis building, construction workers found a time capsule which has been buried in the walls for more than 80 years.
The handwriting on the side of the capsule gives a clue as to what is inside. It reads “1934 - 1935 newspapers.”
The capsule was found a few weeks ago while workers were transforming the building at the eastern end of Margaret Street into a veterinary practice.
Toowoomba Family Vets opened yesterday and owner David Hall plans to open the capsule at the business’ open day on Saturday, November 18.
Mr Hall said it was a surprise to find something so treasured within the walls of such an iconic building.
“We want to open it with the community because we acknowledge that this is something that belongs to everyone because of the history,” he said.
It was exciting to open the business’ doors yesterday.
“When the lease came up I was excited about the opportunity to couple my dream of opening my own clinic and doing it in such a special building,” he said.
“As much as we have developed it into a clinic, we have tried to maintain as much of its original appeal as possible.”
The company also works as a social enterprise, working with organisations to create a positive social impact.
For every major abdominal surgery, it sponsors a life-changing fistula surgery for a woman in need and for every animal vaccination funds are donated to go towards vaccinating a child.
Toowoomba Family Vets open day will be held from noon and the time capsule will be opened around 1pm.
There will be a free barbecue and drinks as well as a jumping castle and activities for children.
