Honouring our heroes

– Christopher Reeve WHAT is it about certain situations which make some people do great deeds? Why do certain people act in a heroic way when faced with difficult situations?

It is very hard to define because everyone has their own idea of what a hero is.

A hero may be an ordinary person that has done extraordinary things. They may be the people who make us proud? They may be those who are strong and brave in the face of danger. They may have done something to make the world we live in a better place. They may not think of themselves as a hero but just doing their job.

The men and women serving in our armed forces are good examples of those who display courage and self-sacrifice. It is a part of our country’s culture to remember all who fought for, and gave their life for, our country.

While some heroes may remain nameless, others are recognised in different ways. They may receive an award, have a road, park or building named after them, or have a memorial built in their honour.

It is important that we recognise even the smallest contributions as they can make a huge difference to the lives of others.

What makes a hero?

There are a number of characteristics that are commonly associated with heroes – qualities people display when faced with a very difficult situation.
