IF A severe storm was to hit Toowoomba and cut power supplies for three days, is there enough food and water in your house to survive the emergency?

It’s a question the State Emergency Service is asking all residents in the lead up to a summer season tipped to bring a number of severe storms to the region.

SES South West Region regional manager Robert Bundy said residents should have a kit inside their home with enough food and water to last three days in the event power supplies were cut.

He said the preparation was critical ahead of a storm season likely to be worse than the previous two years.

“We are expecting more storms,” he said.

“We haven’t had bad ones for a number of years but over this season, it’s very hard to predict when they do come.”

A suitable storm kit should have enough tinned or dry food to last about three days, including baby or infant formula and a gas cooker or barbecue if available.

Documents such as insurance papers should be kept in a sealed plastic envelope, and pets should have adequate food and toys in case of evacuation.

“We ask people to think about what they need and help will come, but it might take a while to get there,” Mr Bundy said.
