CRICKET: Taking a step back from the hockey field to focus on the ball and bat has paid off for Toowoomba’s Kris Glass.

The talented all-rounder will make his South Queensland debut this weekend after getting the call-up after his standout performance for Darling Downs City in the Schaeffer Shield.

“I have always been heavily involved in hockey and that has never allowed me to properly go for this team (South Queensland),” Glass said.

“It’s the first time I’ve actually been able to put my cricket first.”

Although he doesn’t believe he played his best in the Schaeffer Shield he said he was hopeful of getting the call-up.

“Obviously they look at a few different formats and club form which helped me a little bit,” he said.

“Hopefully I can get back in form for this weekend.”

Glass returned from playing hockey and cricket in England this season and is enjoying the change of pace.

“I focused on hockey for quite a while in the past 10 to 12 years,” he said.

“Now I have come back from overseas I’m probably starting to enjoy my cricket a lot more and go down that path.”

He admitted he lost a bit passion for hockey but wasn’t planning on hanging up the sticks and shin guards just yet.

“It’s just a good chance for me, right now anyway, to focus on cricket and give that a go and see where that ends up.”

Glass will join Toowoomba teammates Chris Hall and Shaun McCarthy in the XXXX Gold Cup Series against North Queensland this weekend.

“It’s a pretty new experience. I don’t know a lot of people,” Glass said.

“I’ve heard they (South Queensland) have been quite successful and I’m guessing North Queensland are going to be strong again.”

He said the key to the series would be starting well in the Twenty20 match Friday night and carrying that winning momentum into Saturday and Sunday’s one-day games.
