REGION’S JUNIORS ON SHOW

-

RUGBY LEAGUE: The TACAPS junior girls team has been invited to be mascots for the Women’s Rugby League World Cup final in Brisbane next month.

Director of sport David Wigan said the team was rewarded for its effort in the Karyn Murphy Cup in August.

Australian Jilaroos captain and Darling Downs product Steph Hancock acted as a mentor for the Toowoomba team at the tournament.

The TACAPS team just returned from Sydney where they watched the Australia and Lebanon game.

The Jilaroos did a lap at half time where Hancock recognised the Toowoomba players she mentored.

Wigan said she pulled the Toowoomba players onto the field and introduced them to the Australian team.

“So we’re great mates with Steph now,” he laughed.

Now the Toowoomba juniors have their fingers crossed for an Australian, New Zealand World Cup final.

“They have a fantastic connection with Steph... it would be a very proud moment,” Wigan said.

The Toowoomba players will run out onto the field with the players for the final on December 2.

“They will get to meet the players and be a part of that whole experience,” Wigan said.

“It’s going to be fantastic because some of the girls will probably aspire to also run out one day to represent Australia in rugby league.”

Wigan said Hancock was a fantastic ambassador not just for rugby league but for the region as well.

“The girls are really looking forward to catching up with her,” he said.
