SOFTBALL: This season has been an exciting one for Katie Byrne – it has marked a new era for her club.

After several years in the A-grade wilderness, Aces have returned to Toowoomba Softball Association’s top flight, and Byrne has been part of the team that made it happen.

“A few us got together last season and decided we wanted to bring Aces back,” she said.

“We managed to coax a few players back to the club and some out of retirement as well.

“It was also important to us that our club’s juniors had a pathway.

“We have a lot of talented juniors who weren’t getting the chance to play A-grade. Now they have that chance.”

Byrne said she is more than pleased with how the team is performing in their first season back.

“The season has been really good so far,” she said.

“I think our mix of players is great.

“We have quite a few junior and senior representatives, plus a few younger players on the cusp of A-grade who have made the step up.

“It’s been amazing so far.” Byrne said the team’s all-round ability has been the key to their success this season.

“I think we’re solid right across the park.

“We’ve got some young bodies in the outfield who have great legs under them and strong arms.

“They’re fast when they’re chasing down balls and they can hit home plate when they’re making their throws.

“Our infield is also really strong – making plenty of great plays.

“We can score runs when we need to as well.”

Aces face Warriors White and Byrne is looking forward to the challenge.

“Warriors White is their more experienced team,” Byrne said.

“It will be a real challenge for us but the team is looking forward to it.”
