CRICKET: It was always going to be hard for MetropolitanEasts to chase down Wests’ total of 228.

“We were a bit light on with the bat and probably only batted to about five or six,” Met-Easts captain Matt Dennis said.

“We knew one of us in the top four had to really bat on and get a good score.”

However Met-Easts lost some crucial wickets early which made it hard for them to string some runs together.

“We lost a few wickets at the top and no one really went on with it,” Dennis said.

Wests bowled Met-Easts out for 125 to go through to the Harding-Madsen Shield grand final.

Although it was a disappointing end to Met-Easts one-day campaign Dennis still had praise for his team.

“To make finals and to lose only to Wests and Diggers is not bad for us, we’re a bit of a mixed team,” he said.

Met-Easts will now turn their attention to the Twenty20 games after their opening match on Friday night was washed out.

“Hopefully we can make a bit of a run in the competition and get a few wins before Christmas,” Dennis said.

It was a hugely successful weekend for Wests who kicked off their Twenty20 campaign with a win over University.

“It will give us a lot of confidence going into the Twenty20s and two-day competition,” Wests’ bowler Jacob Sommerfeld said.

In other semi-final news the game between Northern Brothers Diggers and Laidley went down to the wire. Diggers posted a total of 206 however the undefeated Laidley team claimed the winning runs in the 48th over with two wickets in hand.

Wests and Laidley will battle it out for the Harding-Madsen Shield in the new year.
