Hospital honours its many volunteers
DARLING Downs Hospital and Health Board members Dr Ruth Terwijn and Ms Megan O’Shannessy paid tribute to the hundreds of volunteers who generously give their time and effort to help others, at this year’s annual Volunteers’ Christmas Lunch.
More than 100 volunteers and Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service staff enjoyed some traditional Christmas fare at the event, which is a highlight of the volunteers’ calendar.
“I am so happy to be here to celebrate the festive season and to say thank you for the work you have done this year,” Dr Terwijn said.
“We have more than 380 volunteers and it is people like each and every one of you who make such a difference in the lives of the people who come through our doors.
“I’ve seen you at work, a friendly smile, giving directions, holding a hand without question.
“You know its value, but I’ve seen its impact; it matters, it’s important, it makes a difference.
“One of our Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service values is compassion and this room is filled with people who show care, kindness and support to others on a daily basis, and we cannot thank you enough for that.”
Dr Terwijn acknowledged the many years of service that the HHS’s volunteers had collectively amassed.
“Our DDHHS volunteers have 1318 years combined service, and that covers the whole spectrum, from those who joined the team this year, to those who have been with us for decades.
“I must mention our longest serving volunteer in the room with us today, Lois Williams, who has supported us for 30 years.”
