Junior brings flair to national team

FUTSAL: Frederick Pfeiffer brings a European flair to the Freelance Futsal team.

The 17-year-old is one of two Toowoomba players selected in an under-21 national team to play at the World Cup in Barcelona next week.

Pfeiffer grew up playing football in Germany after making the switch from gymnastics.

He made the first Cologne FC for under-14s before moving to Australia with his family where he discovered a different playing style of football.

“In Germany it’s more about pass control, look up and play around,” he said.

“In Australia they just play it back, play it safe.

“That’s what I think I can bring into futsal in Barcelona.”

When Pfeiffer first moved to Australia about three years ago he didn’t really know a lot about futsal.

“I had never played it before. I didn’t really like it,” he said.

He signed up for a school tournament coached by Freelance Futsal’s Nomes Langham.

“She explained everything really well,” Pfeiffer said.

Now he’s preparing for his first international futsal tournament.

“It’s really good to have Toowoomba boys going to the World Cup, it’s really something different,” he said.

“I feel quite happy I got selected to be in the team representing Freelance futsal.

“I’m really excited to meet all the other teams that made it up to that level.”

Pfeiffer will focus on playing as part of the team.

“It’s not me who’s playing, it’s the team. I really want to show that over there as well,” he said.
