Making real difference

-

Dave Foreman

I’M A youth support worker for United Synergies. I work with young people in a case manage style support, working on their particular goals which are normally quite complex.

I work around issues like homelessness and whether it’s linking in with mental health which is the other side of what we do.

I also deal with disengaged students, looking at different options with their education.

Part of what I do is children’s court support, meeting young people at court when they’re fronting up to the magistrate and supporting them through that.

My favourite part of the job is knowing that the work I do is making a difference.

Some young people we work with are in a low-point in their lives and working with them to hopefully turn it around for themselves is special.

I’m born and bred in Toowoomba and I love it. It’s a town where family is emphasised and the quality of life is great.

I’ve worked at United Synergies for four months now. I work in administration so I take a lot of the first-contact calls from clients.

My favourite part of the job has got to be meeting new people from lots of different places.

Toowoomba is a fantastic place. I feel it is a great place for young people.

There is much more to do here for young people than the smaller surrounding towns.

I’m from Gladstone originally and there wasn’t much to do there for young people compared to here.

I’ve worked at United Synergies for 17 months now and I love it.

It’s great working with all the young people I come across.

I’ve previously lost a family member to suicide and that’s what pushed me down the social work avenue. Now I have the opportunity to help young people who are struggling with similar issues.

The service here at United Synergies works with people from 12 to 25 years of age.

We do a lot of prevention and intervention work trying to make a strong positive difference in young people’s lives.

I’m originally from Cecil Plains, so not too far from here.

I love Toowoomba. I like all the seasons you can get in a day. It’s a great place. I do feel there could be more activities for young people but overall it’s a wonderful town.

Before coming to Toowoomba I was in Warwick working for Child and Youth Mental Health Services and before that I was in Roma after finishing university in Brisbane.

I feel Toowoomba is a happy-medium between living in the bush and living in the big city.

I really like Toowoomba. I feel it is growing and the opportunities for young people are really increasing. The climate is also a winner for me along with all the beautiful flowers.

Working at United Synergies is heaps of fun with lots of caring and passionate people. We can even have pets at work which I love!
