Examination of boarding lives

-

THIS week in Rural Weekly we chat with some students at Downlands College in Toowoomba about what it’s like moving away from the farm to attend boarding school.

Last week we spoke to rural mum, Tricia Agar, from western Queensland about what it’s like sending her kids off to boarding school. Then we we decided to get the other side of the story.

The school year has started for 2018, and for many rural kids that means packing up, leaving the

farm, and heading off to boarding school.

That’s exactly what it meant for Taylor Sutton and Mitchell Kelly, Year 12 boarders at Downlands College.

Mitchell is from a beef cattle property in Thornton and comes from a family of six including his parents, one older sister and two younger brothers. Taylor lives on a beef cattle property near Roma with her family-of-four, including her parents and one older brother.

“When I’m at school, I miss home and when I’m at home I miss school,” Taylor said.
