Hewitt double trouble for Boris

-

Boris Becker says he would love to see Lleyton Hewitt play doubles for Australia in this week’s Davis Cup first-round tie in Brisbane – even if it is at the expense of his beloved Germany.

The guessing game about Australia’s line-up to take on Germany will be answered when the teams are named today, with team captain Hewitt a chance to link with doubles specialist John Peers at Pat Rafter Arena.

Hewitt – who retired from singles in 2016 – is still buzzing from an Australian Open quarter-final finish with Sam Groth and has not ruled out returning to the court this weekend.

Six-time grand slam champ Becker (pictured) said he hoped Hewitt would play in Brisbane after watching in awe as the Australians hit the practice court yesterday.

“I don’t rule out Lleyton Hewitt playing doubles. I would personally like that very much,” said Becker, now the head of German men’s tennis. “He is one of the all-time greats who played in my era.

“Watching him at practice here, it is amazing the shape he is still in.”

Besides their doubles pairing, the Nick Kyrgios-led Australia are also yet to decide on their second player for tomorrow’s opening singles action.

Rookie Alex de Minaur is a chance of getting the nod for the No.2 singles spot ahead of teammates Jordan Thompson and John Millman.

World No.4 doubles player Peers said Hewitt was not doing any damage to his Cup claims on the practice court.

“He’s an unbelievable competitor and unbelievable ambassador,” Peers said.

“When he keeps playing as well as he has, we will see what happens (at the Cup draw).”

Germany will be spearheaded by world No.5 Alexander Zverev.
