WITH two mathematicians for parents, it’s no wonder Lizzie Yevdokimov excels at the subject and has a passion for numbers.

She is competing in the Australian Mathematical Olympiad next week where she will undertake two four-hour exams.

The Year 9 St Ursula’s College student is the first student from the school to be invited to take place in the olympiad.

Lizzie was chosen because of her success in other mathematical programs.

The college runs a Prime Club for those who excel and enjoy maths and director Stephen Broderick said he was very proud of Lizzie’s achievements.

“She is very bright and does very well in these long, marathon type exams,” he said.

“They are her speciality.” Lizzie said her dad was a big influence and inspired her passion for maths.

“I love maths. I feel like it is something different that provides me an opportunity to express myself,” she said.

“I have taken part in maths exams similar to this before and they are pretty difficult.

“It’s not just about what you learn in a textbook, you need creativity to solve the problems.

“I am really excited and pretty proud to be the first person at the college to take part in the AMO.

“My optimal dream is to represent Australia in the International Mathematical Olympiad one day. It is the Olympics of mathematics.”
