Education Queensland says swimming and water safety lessons are encouraged but are not compulsory and not benchmarked.

State Government funding is available for pool hire and transport costs but lessons are at the principal’s discretion, often part of

the school’s health and physical education classes and not benchmarked against what water experts have called for.

Education Queensland gave 849 state primary schools $1m in Learn to Swim grants last year, and 155 schools shared $800,000 for pool cleaning and chemicals.
