POLICE are urging all motorists to follow the Fatal Five after a serious traffic crash closed a major city intersection.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating a serious collision between a motorbike and four-wheel drive in Newtown on Tuesday night.

Initial investigations indicate an unregistered Yamaha motorcycle was travelling south on Anzac Ave when a four-wheel drive turned into James St, colliding with the motorbike.

“The motorcycle impacted heavily with the left side of the four-wheel drive, causing extensive damage to the motorcycle and serious injuries to the male rider,” Inspector Stephen Angus said.

The male rider, 31, from Coomera, was taken to Toowoomba Hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the four-wheel drive was not injured.

Insp Angus said the woman, 38, returned a negative drug test and officers were awaiting the results of a blood test from the motorbike rider.

He was yesterday in a stable condition in hospital.

“The Forensic Crash Unit will be investigating to determine the cause of the crash,” Insp Angus said.

“It is a reminder of the basic Fatal Five causes of traffic crashes in speeding, drug and drink driving, seatbelts and restraints, distractions including the use of mobile phones, and fatigue.

“In addition to the Fatal Five, motorists need to obey road rules.”
