Family wears teal to honour grandma
NINE years ago Danielle Brown lost her grandma to ovarian cancer.
This month she held her sixth fundraising event in her grandma’s honour.
About 120 people gathered at Muller Bros on March 3 for the Teal for Grandma event.
“The signs and symptoms were there, bloating, constipation, back pain bleeding but time after time Grandma was told she was a woman and these things were normal,” Ms Brown said.
“It just so happened that her GP that she had been going to for years was on holidays at her next visit and when she described the symptoms she was having she was sent straight in for a blood test and scan.
“Our worst nightmare confirmed.”
Ms Brown said her grandmother spent five years in chemotherapy, as well as other treatments.
“Ovarian Cancer had picked the wrong woman to mess with,” she said.
“She took everything that was thrown at her like a iron solider but unfortunately five years to the day of her diagnosis she lost her long brave battle.
“My Grandma was my hero.”
Ms Brown said that was why the Teal for Grandma event was born.
“A promise to my Grandma that I would share her story and raise much needed funds for research until an early detection test is developed or even better they find a cure,” she said.
Ms Brown said while final figures were still being counted, the event had raised over $10,000 this year.
