Fundraiser for woman who lost all in house fire

-

CHERYL Murchie lost everything when a fire damaged her home and belongings just before Christmas.

The fire started in the garage and moved onto part of the Rangeville house she had been renting for 18 years.

Her neighbours alerted her to the blaze as she was at work at the time and she raced home to watch her home fill with smoke and fire.

The stress of the ordeal put Ms Murchie in hospital for nine days.

When Ms Murchie left hospital she discovered virtually nothing was salvageable. She lost family photos, treasured memories and Christmas presents.

Earlier this year Ms Murchie’s friends and work colleagues held a fundraiser to help her get back on her feet.

Now, another fundraising event is being held for her, this time by Shelter for Hope.

Shelter for Hope is a charity organisation in Toowoomba which in the past has raised funds for Nepal earthquake victims.

They will be hosting a Nepalese dinner event on Thursday, April 5 at the University of Southern Queensland.

Organiser Prem Lama said he wanted to do anything he could to help Ms Murchie.

“This event is an opportunity to show our support towards her and her family during the difficult time. We would like to provide a little help to her to rebuild her life and start a new journey,” she said.

“Cheryl has been a huge part of the USQ community. She is the one who serves up your coffee and great food each day in the refectory with a great deal of sass and a big pinch of love and care.”

The dinner will be held at the Uni Bar at R Block from 6pm.

Cost is $15 per person and for bookings email carmel.t@cateringpeople.com.au or shelterforhope@gmail.com.
