Young players shine
BASKETBALL: The Friday night basketball secondary school competition concluded with a thrilling evening of hoops under lights.
The 31st instalment of the competition, giving secondary school teenagers the chance to get involved in the sport in a team environment, drew the largest participation rate in its proud history.
Centenary Heights State School claimed the champion girls’ school trophy donated by Kathy Gouldson, with St Joseph’s College taking out the boys’ trophy, donated by John Gouldson.
Competition secretary Deb Newton commended all teams for the involvement, including the help of the Toowoomba Mountaineers.
“It was a really good crowd and atmosphere on the night,” Newton said.
“There were some close games and unexpected wins. It was a good night that showcased some of our basketball talents in Toowoomba.
“Mountaineers players were allocated schools and helped
out.
“Everyone wants to be a rep player in Toowoomba, and with the Mountaineers they can aim for it.”
Newton said she was looking forward to projected expansion of the competition in 2019.
“We’re hoping to have 18 teams in the comp next year,” she said.
“With new centres open at Wilsonton and Grammar, more teams will have home games next year as well.”
