Stars unearthed as Gatton side arrives
RUGBY LEAGUE: A side making big inroads and lethal spine combinations could play a big role in the make up of the TRL season.
Andrew O’Brien from At The Footy with Obee and Cookie was on hand at Father Ranger Oval for the blockbuster between Warwick and Goondiwindi, and said a number of stars emerged from the 80minute spectacle.
“We saw a force to be reckoned with in Goondiwindi’s Brandon McGrady,” O’Brien said.
“The Dan Murphy and Ben Sullivan combination with Paul Cantwell is to be reckoned with as well.
Gatton was one of the star performers across the weekend, and they certainly didn’t go unnoticed by O’Brien.
“Gatton have arrived and put their stamp on the competition with the likes of Hayden lipp, Dennis Burgoyne and the flyer Austin Jennings,” he said.
“Last year when I saw Travis Turnbull make his debut, he was the fastest I had seen since Kerry Boustead, but I had the hairs on the back of my neck standing up when Austin scored a 40-metre try with no room to move.
“There are so many players with Queensland Cup experience that have come into the competition and have really lifted it.”
O’Brien said he expected solid crowd numbers to continue with a number of quality games this weekend.
“There have been good crowds everywhere, and I’m expecting big crowds at Valleys and Gatton this weekend,” he said.
“Football on a Saturday night at Valleys is always good, and it’s Gatton’s first home game of the season, and there is a real anticipation with them.
“Game of the round is Gatton and Warwick. They are two big forward packs. Gatton’s defence is just as impressive as their attack, which is the same with Warwick.”
At The Footy with Obee and Cookie will broadcast on Power FM at the Valleys vs Wattles game on Saturday night, and Gatton vs Warwick on Sunday.
